6 Week Ultrasound Twins – What to Expect

What can you see on a 6 week twin ultrasound? Here’s what to expect on the sonogram when you are 6 weeks pregnant with twins! Keep in mind, on a 6 week ultrasound twins can show various levels of development.

What can you see on the 6 week twin ultrasound?

By the time you’re 6 weeks pregnant with twins, you have a very good chance of seeing both fetal poles and heartbeats. Remember, in this very early stage of pregnancy, even being off by one day in your date estimations can make a big difference. So, don’t sweat it if you don’t see everything just yet. At the very least, you’re likely to see both gestational sacs at your 6 week twin ultrasound.

How can you schedule a 6 week twin ultrasound?

Usually, women who have undergone fertility treatments or have a history of early miscarriage are more likely to have an earlier ultrasound. If you fall into one of these categories, it is likely that you are already in close contact with your doctor, and they will schedule you for an ultrasound earlier than 8 weeks gestation. Most women who conceive naturally or do not have a history of pregnancy loss will not have their first ultrasound until 8 weeks of pregnancy.

What if I didn’t see what I expected on my 6 week twin ultrasound?

Seeing twins at 6 weeks gestation on an ultrasound can look many different ways. As mentioned above, just because you don’t see a fetal pole or heartbeat yet doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong. Your doctor will likely schedule another ultrasound in the next week, or maximum two weeks, to check babies again.

What does a 6 weeks twins ultrasound look like?

As previously mentioned, your 6 weeks twins ultrasound could show a little or a lot! Would you like an example? Take a look at this photo of my 6 weeks twins ultrasound, taken at precisely 6 weeks and 4 days gestation. Remember, on a 6 week ultrasound twins can show various levels of development.

Will I know that I’m having twins at 6 weeks gestation?

Not every ultrasound will reveal twins at 6 weeks gestation. Some women don’t discover they’re expecting twins until late in the first trimester! However, after your 20 week ultrasound (the anatomy scan), it is very unlikely to discover a second baby that may have been hiding in previous ultrasounds.

My ultrasound experience at 6 weeks pregnant with twins

As I mentioned above, I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and 4 days pregnant with my twins. This was my second ultrasound (for information about my first ultrasound, check out this post). At this ultrasound, we were able to see both fetal poles, and by God’s grace, two healthy heartbeats! My next ultrasound would take place at 8 weeks, and you can read about that here.
