What can you see on the ultrasound of twins at 8 weeks gestation?
Unlike the uncertainty you may have had at the 6 week ultrasound, twins at 8 weeks gestation will both certainly show fetal poles and heartbeats. This will be a relief, since before now, you may only have seen their gestational sacs! You may be surprised at how much detail you can see at just 8 weeks pregnant with twins.
What if I didn’t see what I expected on my 8 week twin ultrasound?
This is still fairly early in the pregnancy, so a miscalculation in the conception date could mean that you do not see the fetal poles or heartbeats. Your doctor will be able to determine your twins’ gestational age and adjust your ultrasound appointments accordingly.
Twin ultrasound 8 weeks – What does it look like?

In the first image above, you can clearly see two babies. The black round spots are the gestational sacs, and the white blob inside of each sac is the baby.
In the image below, I had another ultrasound conducted the next day at my regular OBGYN (until this point, I’d been under the care of my fertility doctor). This image was taken at 8 weeks and 1 day gestation. You might be surprised how much detail you can see this early. The baby on the right is splayed out like a starfish inside of her little sac!
Will I know that I’m having twins at 8 weeks gestation?
More than likely, yes! However, on occasion women don’t find out that they’re carrying twins until later in the first trimester. Chances are that if you’re 8 weeks pregnant with twins, you will know it after this ultrasound!
My ultrasound experience at 8 weeks pregnant with twins
As you can see from my sonograms above, we were able to clearly see my daughters at 8 weeks, and both had strong heartbeats. I was mostly relieved to see that this was still the case after my 6 week ultrasound, because the first 8 weeks of pregnancy are usually when a miscarriage will occur (and we had sadly already suffered three miscarriages prior to this pregnancy). Take heart – if your babies are healthy at the 8 week ultrasound, it’s a very good sign!
