As you’re creating your registry, you might be wondering, “How on earth do I know how many diapers I need in each size?” This chart should help! I spent 2 children and 3 years perfecting these numbers. When I was pregnant with my first child, I researched roughly how many diapers I’d need in each size so I could put the appropriate amount on my registry. I actually kept track of those numbers, and kept track of how many we used so that I’d know for future children! After my second was born, I used this chart and it was accurate pretty much down to the last box of diapers. I was glad to have it when we got pregnant with the twins – I could just double my numbers, and knew what we’d need!
Keep in mind, this chart will vary greatly based on the size of your baby at birth, how fast baby grows, and what percentile they hit on their growth charts. That said, it should be at least a helpful starting point as you begin planning your registry (or diaper budget)!
For reference, all of our children (even the twins) weighed between 7.5-9lbs at birth and were all full-term babies. They have always been in the 88th percentile and above for weight and height. Feel free to adjust your diaper plan based on your own baby’s stats!

How many diapers does a newborn use a day? They use a lot more than an older infant! Anywhere between 8-12 diapers per day for the first month is very normal. In the chart above, I purposefully didn’t multiply the number of newborn diapers needed per day out for twins or triplets. This is because your babies may not be in newborn diapers for very long! Mine only wore newborn diapers for about the first week, maybe two (see the top of this page for their sizes at birth). Additionally, you can snag a lot of newborn diapers from your hospital room if you play your cards right, and so the number you’ll need on hand at home might be very minimal. So, “how many newborn diapers do I need?” I would advise having a sleeve or small box of them on hand at home before baby is born, get as many as you can from the hospital, and buy the rest of what you need. If you’re trying to register, register for sizes 1 and beyond to ensure you don’t end up with tons of unused newborn diapers.

How many diapers does a baby use in a year? The good news is, the chart above represents ALL of the diapers baby will use, to include beyond their first year. So breathe easy, you don’t need to hurry to collect this large number of diapers! All four of my babies were in size 4 diapers at their first birthday. Again, this will heavily depend on your baby’s size and how fast they grow.
How many baby wipes do I need?
“How many baby wipes do I need?” is another natural question when expecting a baby (or babies). Now that I’ve diapered four children, I have to say that I find the estimations at various websites like this one to be very high. Most sources settle on 8,000 – 10,000 wipes for a singleton baby’s first year. In my estimation, our family has been just fine with about 7,000 wipes per year. That is still a generous estimate for two reasons. First, we stopped wiping for wet diapers a long time ago, as our babies are prone to diaper rash and our pediatrician advised us not to wipe for just pee diapers. Second, when you’re a new parent, you tend to use way more wipes for a poop diaper than you will later on. As you get the hang of it, you will use way fewer wipes per diaper change. So, “how many wipes do I need for baby’s first year?” Like everything else, it depends on your baby, but hopefully the chart above gives you a good reference!
